Salt spray test induces corrosion of resistant materials and surface coatings. These tests often fall under environmental aging or equipment qualification to ensure that components under test can withstand intense or prolonged environmental stresses over accelerated life duration.
Many factors affect the corrosion of the test material. Metallic finishes or corrosion-resistant coatings are commonly used on equipment that undergo salt spray testing. The material as well as the duration of the test may affect the oxidation of equipment. These factors are determined by a variety of standards; ASTM-B117 is the most common, although Clark also tests to MIL-STD-810, ISO-9227, and RTCA DO-160 standards.

The testing chamber provides a controlled corrosive environment where a salt water solution is atomized by means of spray nozzles using pressurized air. This produces an environment of dense salt water fog, so that test samples exposed to this environment are subjected to severely corrosive conditions.
